Meet Alma
Alma was never planned. I already had 3 dogs… my hands were full and my rental house in Merida only allowed for 2 dogs of which now i had 4. But some souls arrive because they must. Our worker at the time heard Alma howling by the wall, she didn’t know what it was but ran to go see and found little Alma tied up inside a plastic bag, dumped by the low wall that once stood there. She was crying, trembling… and still trying to hold on with her legs tied up. Tick-infested inside her ears and all over her body. She was not a puppy but not very big either, a vulerable age where people tend to get rid of dogs as it’s when they are most curious and naughty and not so cute as they once were.
Mary put Alma in the bodega and when i went to see her she growled at me every time I came near, fear was the only thing she knew. But i couldn’t just leave her or abandon her i took her with us to the vets so she could get checked. Watching me with the other dogs she soon learnt that i wasn’t going to hurt her and she relaxed pretty fast.
Alma became part of the family instantly, Bruja took care of her and Pushy. Frida a little disgruntled at having to share mummy again with another dog took her on also knowing deeply that the dogs that were coming needed so much and we could give it. We moved our life to Izamal so we could have a much bigger garden as walking 4 dogs in the city was getting really complicated on the roads. We spent our days walking the backs of Izamal where we would meet horses roaming free and other doggies too. We did this until the big dogs that kept growing in amount could live at the Quinta in freedom and safety.
Alma is calm but cheeky, brave but sensitive, always watching us with those soulful eyes that say “thank you for choosing me.” Now she runs wild with her friends in the sunshine,queen of the dog house by night and the garden by day. She is loyal, grateful, and full of cheeky mischief, never forgetting the pain she came from, but choosing joy anyway.
Alma lives each day knowing the Quinta is hers, and that she will be loved here forever.
